(Первое издание словаря Ноя Вебстера (Noah Webster), содержавшее около пяти тысяч слов американского варианта английского языка, вышло в свет в 1806 году. По замыслу автора, словарь должен был отразить реальную речь новой нации, поэтому в него вошли слова, которые не были включены ни в один из современных ему британских словарей. В 1828 году вышло знаменитое двухтомное издание словаря Вебстера, которое содержало уже более 70 тысяч статей.)
